A friend of ours, who was particularly scared of them, gave us an ultimatum, “We’re going back to Mr. Joshi’s guest house! ” For the benefit of all parties involved, we decided to head back after a quick meditation. Interestingly, we got to know that the sadhu we had met in the Dunagiri Temple a few days earlier was Swami Dharmendra Giri, a disciple of Balvant Maharaj. Dharmendra Giri had made his first cave on an adjacent hill, single-handedly fighting with a bear(s) and taking his righteous place to meditate! Right from the first day, my focus was to prepare myself to meditate deeply in the cave. Alas, for some reason I found it difficult to do my kriyas as effectively as I usually do. Leaving the matter in God’s hands, I stopped thinking about it for the time being. Motivated by the holiness of this cave, I along with a couple of friends, set out on our pilgrimage.
And just as most dogs will do, he smelled my feet and then quietly sat beside me as I found an asana to meditate. We had made up our mind to spend the night in Pandvakohli and hike back the next morning. But the spiders and tarantulas we discovered in our room changed our minds!

Nearly 80 percent of the sewage dumped into the river is untreated, and the amount of human fecal matter is more than 300 times the limit set by India’s Central Pollution Control Board. The name of Ganga appears only twice in the Rig Veda, an early sacred Hindu text, and it was only later that Ganga assumed great importance as the goddess Ganga. For Hindus, the River Ganges is sacred and revered, embodied by the goddess Ganga. Though iconography of the goddess varies, she is most often depicted as a beautiful woman with a white crown, riding the Makra (a creature with the head of a crocodile and the tail of a dolphin). She features either two or four arms, holding a variety of objects ranging from water lilies to a water pot to a rosary.

A stone image of a deity would be fixed immovably in a temple, but a bronze image like this could be taken out in processions for many more worshipers to see and be blessed by. Ganga’s descent from the heavens was so forceful that Lord Shiva had to intervene, catching her in his matted hair to break her fall and control the flow.
The story centers on Yuri Zhivago, a doctor and poet, and how he is affected by the Russian Revolution and the Russian Civil War. To control Ganga’s overwhelming force and prevent the destruction of the earth, Bhagiratha prayed to Lord Shiva for help. Responding to his plea, Shiva bore the brunt of Ganga’s descent by capturing her in his matted hair, breaking her fall and taming her ferocity. Originating from the Gangotri Glacier, high in the Himalayas of northern India, the river flows southeast through India, into Bangladesh, before spilling into the Bay of Bengal. After waking up early, as usual, I did my energization exercises, sadhana, had tea, and then chanted for an hour to Master. Sitting in the clear sun, free from Delhi’s pollution, singing to my Guru was a deeply joyful experience, to say the least. Every morning, I eagerly waited to soak in the rays of the sun and recharge my body and mind. After having adequate rest and meditation, when we finally decided to head back, the sun started to set. With our torches in our hands, we slowly descended the Himalayan jungle being aware of God’s presence and protection around us.
